BREAKING: Louis Vuitton Signs Virgil Abloh as New Director

In a stunning move, French heritage house Louis Vuitton of LVMH has signed Virgil Abloh to be the next artistic director of men’s wear at Louis Vuitton, one of the oldest and most powerful European houses in the luxury business.

Abloh is best known as the founder of the haute street wear label Off-White and a longtime creative director for Kanye West.

In a statement TO THE new York Times, Abloh commented: “I feel elated. This opportunity to think through what the next chapter of design and luxury will mean at a brand that represents the pinnacle of luxury was always a goal in my wildest dreams. And to show a younger generation that there is no one way anyone in this kind of position has to look is a fantastically modern spirit in which to start.”

The appointment, which was merely rumored in recent months, is part of a shake-up on the men’s wear side of LVMH, which began in January with the departure of Kim Jones, Abloh’s predecessor at Louis Vuitton. Last week, it was announced that Mr. Jones would become the men’s wear designer at LVMH stablemate Christian Dior, replacing Kris van Assche.

Abloh’s appointment is also a reflection of the increasing consumer-driven intermingling of the luxury and street wear sectors.

Kim Jones Replaces Kris Van Assche at Dior Homme

Kris Van Assche has officially stepped down from his post as Artistic Director at Dior Homme after 11 years at the helm of the fashion house, confirmed by Petro Beccari, chairman and CEO of Christian Dior Couture.

Shortly after the news broke, it was revealed that Kim Jones, who recently left Louis Vuitton after seven years, will be the one to replace the Belgian at Dior Homme. Dior’s newly installed chairman, Pietro Baccari, said in a statement: “I am delighted to welcome Kim Jones at Dior Homme. He will benefit from the support of the teams and from the ‘savoir-faire’ of the Ateliers to create an elegant men’s wardrobe both classic and anchored in contemporary culture. I am confident that he will continue to further develop Dior Homme on a global scale.”

Beccari also thanked Van Assche for his work at the house, writing:  “I thank Kris Van Assche for contributing to the amazing growth of Dior Homme by creating an elegant and contemporary silhouette for men. He wrote an important chapter in the history of Dior Homme and played a key role in its development.”

Van Assche’s departure statement read: “After eleven years at Dior Homme, my mind and heart filled with experiences, I am leaving this beautiful house to pursue new challenges. I wish to thank Bernard Arnault for the trust he placed in me, Sidney Toledano and Serge Brunschwig for their warm welcome at Dior and their continuous support during all those years of collaboration.”

Van Assche started his career at Yves Saint Laurent in 1998 when he was appointed as Hedi Slimane’s first assistant for the Rive Gauche Homme line. When Slimane moved to Dior Homme in 2000, he followed his mentor before ultimately taking over the reigns upon Slimane’s departure in 2008.

Since then, the Belgian has redefined tailored menswear at Dior Homme, often opting for sleeker, minimalistic silhouettes.
